How to make a blank world map
- Start with the world map. The editor opens on a map picker. Choose World and every country is on the board, unpainted. If the map is really about one part of the world, pick just those countries instead and the view crops to them.
- Write the legend first. Add one colour per category and type its label: joined before 1990, speaks it natively, been on my list for years. Doing this before you start clicking means you never have to remember what a shade meant.
- Click countries to fill them. Each click paints the country in the selected colour. Swap in a stripe, dot or checkerboard pattern when two categories sit next to each other, or when the map has to survive a black and white print.
- Export or publish. Download a PNG for a post, a slide or a print. Publishing instead gives you a link with a preview image that unfurls in a chat, and puts the map in the community list further down this page.
What you can do
- Every one of the 206 countries and territories on one clickable map.
- Flat colours or three fill patterns, so categories still read in greyscale.
- A legend you write yourself, drag anywhere on the map and resize.
- Open a country into its own internal regions: 221 countries carry their own subdivision data.
- Globe mode wraps the same map onto a rotatable sphere for a different kind of picture.
- Optional overlays: rivers, lakes, major cities, the graticule, and the equator and tropic lines.
- Background, borders and label colours are all editable, and borders can be switched off entirely.
- Fill every unpainted country in one action, or clear everything painted in a single colour.
- A full-size PNG at the end of it, with no watermark on the picture and no export limit.

Language and alphabet maps
Where a language is official, where it is spoken but not official, and where it is taught in schools. Three colours and a legend say more than a paragraph, and the pattern fills keep the "both" case distinct.
Election and referendum results
Colour each country by who won, how it voted at the UN, or which way a referendum went. Publish it and the link carries a preview image, so the map itself shows up in the post rather than a bare URL.
Alliances, blocs and empires
NATO, the EU, the Commonwealth, a trading bloc, or an empire at its greatest extent. Historical maps work well here because you control every fill: nothing is tied to present-day borders except the outlines.
Sport, qualified and out
A World Cup group stage, a qualifying round, or a medal table by country. Update the same map as the tournament goes on and publish a new version each round.
Whatever the internet is arguing about
Driving side, plug sockets, what a bread roll is called, coffee per person, the age you can drive. The format is half the joke, and it takes about five minutes to make.

Common questions
How many countries can I colour?
206, which is every country and dependent territory in the map data, listed in full further up this page. You can also narrow the map to a handful of countries if the rest are not part of the story.
Can I zoom into one country and colour its regions?
Yes. 221 countries can be opened into their own subdivisions, so France becomes its departments and Japan becomes its prefectures instead of one solid shape. You can mix expanded and unexpanded countries on the same map.
Can I make a map of one continent instead?
Yes. Select the countries you want and the map crops to them, which is how a South America or an Africa map is made. Europe has its own page with a proper Europe projection, so start there if the map is European.
Is there a globe?
Yes. Globe mode projects the same coloured map onto a sphere you can rotate, which is useful when the story is about the Pacific or the poles and a flat map distorts it.
Can I put my own images on the map?
Yes. Images can be dropped onto the map and moved and resized where you want them, and on the countries map a country can hold a picture inside its own outline as well as a colour, which is how flag maps and face maps get made.
Are island territories and dependencies included?
They are separate shapes on the map rather than being folded into the country that governs them, and the far-flung parts of a country can be switched on so they show up near it instead of being lost at the edge of the frame.
Do I have to sign up?
No. The editor opens straight away and the map you are working on is kept in this browser. An account only matters if you want your published maps collected on one profile or want to edit them from another device.
What do I get when I export?
A PNG of the map at full size, with the legend where you put it and no watermark. If you publish as well, you get a page with the map on it that you can link anywhere.
