How to make an iceberg chart
- Name the levels. A new chart opens with six depth levels, one of them above the waterline. Rename them for your subject, add levels down to ten or trim back to two, and move the waterline if more of your iceberg deserves daylight. The names are half the joke, so spend a minute on them.
- Fill each depth. Click "+ Add" on a level and type entries one after another; Enter adds each one and keeps the box open. An entry can also be an image, and any entry can carry a note that readers see when they tap it on the published page, which is where the explanations belong.
- Argue with yourself about placement. Drag entries between levels until the ordering feels right. The whole format is a claim about what is common knowledge and what is deep lore, so the dragging is not housekeeping, it is the actual editorial work.
- Style it and export. Pick a color ramp, a font and a label style, or swap the drawn iceberg for flat bands or your own background picture. Then download the PNG, or publish to get a shareable page where every entry is clickable and its note is readable.

How many levels can an iceberg have?
Between two and ten here, and a new chart opens with the classic six. You can rename every level, reorder them, and choose how many sit above the waterline; most icebergs keep one level in daylight and stack everything else below it.
Can I put images on the iceberg?
Yes. Any entry can be an image with a caption instead of plain text, and the whole background can be your own picture if you would rather not use the drawn iceberg scene. Text entries stay the backbone of the format because the deep levels are usually names, not pictures.
How do I explain what the deep entries mean?
Give the entry a note. Notes do not clutter the chart itself; on the published page a reader taps any entry and the note opens beside it, which is exactly how people read a good iceberg: scan the levels first, then dig into the ones they do not recognize.
Is it free, and is there a watermark?
It is free, there is no account to create, and there is no limit on charts. The downloaded PNG carries the site address in small type in the bottom corner, outside your content; nothing is drawn across the chart, and the published page shows no mark at all.
What happened to icebergcharts.com?
It shut down in April 2026, taking the easiest dedicated iceberg tool with it, and most of what remains is either a generic design app or a template you fill in by hand. This editor was built as a proper replacement: levels, waterline, notes, drag placement and export, in the browser with nothing to install.
