How to make a blank Africa map

  1. Open the Africa map. Start from the button above and the editor opens on this map, with the 56 countries already selected and nothing painted. They are all listed further down this page. For a finer map, 53 of them can be opened into their own states, provinces and regions, which is 880 shapes instead of 56.
  2. Write the legend before you paint. Add one entry per category and say what it means in your own words. The legend is part of the exported image, so a map that made sense to you at midnight still makes sense to someone who sees it cold.
  3. Fill the countries. Every click paints one country. Fill everything you have not touched in a baseline colour first and paint the exceptions on top, or paste a table of country names and values and let the colour scale do it.
  4. Export or publish. Download a PNG, JPEG, SVG or PDF at the size you ask for, or publish for a link with a preview image. Published maps of Africa show up in the community list at the bottom of this page.

What you can do

  • All 56 countries of Africa, each a separate clickable shape.
  • A detailed version: 53 of these countries open into their own states, provinces and regions, 880 shapes in all.
  • Flat colours, or stripe, dot and checkerboard patterns for the categories that would otherwise look alike.
  • Colour by numbers: paste a table of countries and values and the map fills itself in on a scale you choose.
  • A legend you write yourself, with a heading, dragged wherever the map has room.
  • Country names or codes printed on the map, on or off, in a colour you pick.
  • Add or drop a country before you start, and the view refits to whatever is left on the board.
  • Backgrounds, borders and border colours are all editable, or turn the borders off entirely.
  • PNG, JPEG, SVG and PDF export, with nothing drawn across the map and no export limit.

Make your own blank Africa map

Colonial history and independence

Who ruled what, and the year each country took it back. A map banded by independence year is one of the few pictures that makes the second half of the twentieth century legible at a glance.

Development and infrastructure

Electrification, mobile coverage, rail, malaria, income per person. Fifty-six countries makes a colour scale worth using: paste a table of values and let the scale pick the shades.

Where you have been in Africa

The countries you have visited, lived in, worked in or only changed planes in. Three colours and a legend that says what each one means, and 56 shapes is small enough to finish in one sitting.

Something the country map is too coarse for

When a whole country is too big a unit for what you are showing, 53 of them can be opened into their own regions on this same map, so one country can carry its internal detail while its neighbours stay solid.

Common questions

How many countries are on the Africa map?

56, every one of them a separate shape you can click and fill. The list above runs from Algeria to Zimbabwe.

Which countries count as Africa here?

Egypt is drawn here rather than on the Middle East map, because it is on the continent. Western Sahara and Somaliland are separate shapes, so you can colour them apart from Morocco and Somalia, or paint them the same and the split disappears.

Can I colour the regions inside a country?

Yes. 53 of these countries carry their own subdivision data, so one can be opened into its states, provinces or regions while the rest stay solid, and opening all of them gives 880 shapes instead of 56.

Can I add a country that is not on this map?

Yes, but from the create screen rather than from this button: the same selection is a tile there with these countries already ticked, so you can add and drop before the map is made. The frame refits to whatever ends up on the board.

Do I need an account?

No. The editor opens straight away, the map stays in this browser while you work, and exporting an image never asks you to sign in. An account only matters if you want to publish a map at a link other people can open.

Can I use the exported map commercially?

The image is yours, and we ask for no credit: the only mark on it is the site address in small type in the bottom corner, and nothing is drawn across the map. Nothing from the map data is added to the picture either, because we only ship boundary data whose licence is satisfied by naming it on our credits page, so there is no credit line to print and nothing for you to pass on. Anything you add to the map stays your own.
