How to make a blank Brazil map

  1. Open the Brazil map. Start from the button above. What a click paints here is one state, and there are 27 of them, all listed further down this page. If you want finer detail than that, the 5,568 municipalities are a second map of the same country.
  2. Write the legend before you paint. Add one entry per category and say what it means in your own words. The legend is part of the exported image, so a map that made sense to you at midnight still makes sense to someone who sees it cold.
  3. Fill the states. Every click paints one state. With 27 of them, the fastest route is often to fill everything in a baseline colour first and then paint the exceptions, or to paste a table of values and let the colour scale do it.
  4. Export or publish. Download a PNG, JPEG, SVG or PDF at the size you ask for, or publish for a link with a preview image. Published maps show up in the community list at the bottom of this page.

What you can do

  • All 27 states, each a separate clickable shape.
  • A second, finer map of the same country: 5,568 municipalities.
  • Flat colours, or stripe, dot and checkerboard patterns for the categories that would otherwise look alike.
  • Colour by numbers: paste a table of names and values and the map fills itself in on a scale you choose.
  • A legend you write yourself, with a heading, dragged wherever the map has room.
  • Names or codes printed on the states, on or off, in a colour you pick.
  • Fill every state you have not touched in one action, or clear the whole map in one colour.
  • Backgrounds, borders and border colours are all editable, or turn the borders off entirely.
  • Crop the exported view, so the map fills the frame instead of floating in it.
  • PNG, JPEG, SVG and PDF export at the end, with nothing to install first.

Elections

Presidential rounds by state, turnout, party strength. Results are published by state and the two-round system makes the map a natural before and after pair.

Forest, farming and heat

Deforestation, soy and cattle, rainfall, temperature. Brazil is big enough that a state map still hides a great deal, which is worth admitting in the legend.

Where you have been in Brazil

The states you have visited, lived in, worked in or only passed through. Three colours and a legend that says what each one means, and 27 shapes is small enough to finish in one sitting.

Something the country map is too coarse for

When a state is too big a unit for what you are showing, the same country is also drawn as 5,568 municipalities. It is a much slower map to paint by hand, so it is the one to use with a pasted table of values.

Common questions

How many states are on the Brazil map?

27, every one of them a separate shape you can click and fill. The list above runs from Acre to Tocantins.

What exactly does this map cover?

The five macro regions are groups of states rather than shapes of their own, so a map about the north east or the south is made by colouring several states the same.

Can I colour something smaller than a state?

Yes. The same country is also drawn as 5,568 municipalities, which is a second starting map rather than a zoom: pick it and every click paints one of those instead.

Can I put the names on the map itself?

Yes. Region labels can be switched on for the whole map, in a colour and size you choose, and you can write your own text for any state where the real name is too long to fit. On a busy map most people leave the labels off and let the legend carry it.

Can I put Brazil on a map with other countries?

Yes, on the world map. Pick the countries you want, and open any of them into their own regions, so Brazil can appear at this level of detail beside its neighbours at theirs.

Is the Brazil municipalities map slow to open?

It is one of the biggest maps on the site: 5,568 separate shapes and about 2.0 MB of map data, so give it a few seconds to open, and longer than that on an older phone. Three things make it easier to work with: zoom in and paint one area at a time rather than the whole map at once, switch the region borders off while you work, and paste a table of values instead of clicking 5,568 municipalities by hand.

Do I need an account?

No. The editor opens straight away, the map stays in this browser while you work, and exporting an image never asks you to sign in. An account only matters if you want to publish a map at a link other people can open.

Can I use the exported map commercially?

The image is yours, and we ask for no credit: the only mark on it is the site address in small type in the bottom corner, and nothing is drawn across the map. Nothing from the map data is added to the picture either, because we only ship boundary data whose licence is satisfied by naming it on our credits page, so there is no credit line to print and nothing for you to pass on. Anything you add to the map stays your own.
