Two levels of detail
The same country, drawn twice. Each one is a starting map of its own.
| Map | Shapes you can colour |
|---|---|
| Counties | 42 counties |
| Communes | 3,226 communes |
How to make a blank Romania map
- Open the Romania map. Start from the button above. What a click paints here is one county, and there are 42 of them, all listed further down this page. If you want finer detail than that, the 3,226 communes are a second map of the same country.
- Write the legend before you paint. Add one entry per category and say what it means in your own words. The legend is part of the exported image, so a map that made sense to you at midnight still makes sense to someone who sees it cold.
- Fill the counties. Every click paints one county. With 42 of them, the fastest route is often to fill everything in a baseline colour first and then paint the exceptions, or to paste a table of values and let the colour scale do it.
- Export or publish. Download a PNG, JPEG, SVG or PDF at the size you ask for, or publish for a link with a preview image. Published maps show up in the community list at the bottom of this page.
What you can do
- All 42 counties, each a separate clickable shape.
- A second, finer map of the same country: 3,226 communes.
- Flat colours, or stripe, dot and checkerboard patterns for the categories that would otherwise look alike.
- Colour by numbers: paste a table of names and values and the map fills itself in on a scale you choose.
- A legend you write yourself, with a heading, dragged wherever the map has room.
- Names or codes printed on the counties, on or off, in a colour you pick.
- Fill every county you have not touched in one action, or clear the whole map in one colour.
- Backgrounds, borders and border colours are all editable, or turn the borders off entirely.
- Crop the exported view, so the map fills the frame instead of floating in it.
- PNG, JPEG, SVG and PDF export at the end, with nothing to install first.

Elections and turnout
Presidential rounds, parliamentary results, turnout. County level is how every Romanian result is published, so a table of numbers pastes straight in.
The historical regions
Transylvania, Moldavia, Wallachia, the Banat. Each is a group of counties, so colouring several counties the same is how you draw a region that has no official boundary.
Where you have been in Romania
The counties you have visited, lived in, worked in or only passed through. Three colours and a legend that says what each one means, and 42 shapes is small enough to finish in one sitting.
Something the country map is too coarse for
When a county is too big a unit for what you are showing, the same country is also drawn as 3,226 communes. It is a much slower map to paint by hand, so it is the one to use with a pasted table of values.

Common questions
How many counties are on the Romania map?
42, every one of them a separate shape you can click and fill. The list above runs from Alba to Vrancea.
What exactly does this map cover?
Bucharest is a county-level city, so it is a shape of its own sitting inside Ilfov county, which is why the count is forty-two.
Can I colour something smaller than a county?
Yes. The same country is also drawn as 3,226 communes, which is a second starting map rather than a zoom: pick it and every click paints one of those instead.
Can I put the names on the map itself?
Yes. Region labels can be switched on for the whole map, in a colour and size you choose, and you can write your own text for any county where the real name is too long to fit. On a busy map most people leave the labels off and let the legend carry it.
Can I put Romania on a map with other countries?
Yes, on the world map. Pick the countries you want, and open any of them into their own regions, so Romania can appear at this level of detail beside its neighbours at theirs.
Is the Romania communes map slow to open?
It is one of the biggest maps on the site: 3,226 separate shapes and about 1.4 MB of map data, so give it a few seconds to open, and longer than that on an older phone. Three things make it easier to work with: zoom in and paint one area at a time rather than the whole map at once, switch the region borders off while you work, and paste a table of values instead of clicking 3,226 communes by hand.
Do I need an account?
No. The editor opens straight away, the map stays in this browser while you work, and exporting an image never asks you to sign in. An account only matters if you want to publish a map at a link other people can open.
Can I use the exported map commercially?
The image is yours, and we ask for no credit: the only mark on it is the site address in small type in the bottom corner, and nothing is drawn across the map. Nothing from the map data is added to the picture either, because we only ship boundary data whose licence is satisfied by naming it on our credits page, so there is no credit line to print and nothing for you to pass on. Anything you add to the map stays your own.
