How to make a blank Ireland map
- Open the Ireland map. Start from the button above. What a click paints here is one county, and there are 34 of them, all listed further down this page. Check that list before you start: it is the whole of what this map can colour.
- Write the legend before you paint. Add one entry per category and say what it means in your own words. The legend is part of the exported image, so a map that made sense to you at midnight still makes sense to someone who sees it cold.
- Fill the counties. Every click paints one county. With 34 of them, the fastest route is often to fill everything in a baseline colour first and then paint the exceptions, or to paste a table of values and let the colour scale do it.
- Export or publish. Download a PNG, JPEG, SVG or PDF at the size you ask for, or publish for a link with a preview image. Published maps show up in the community list at the bottom of this page.
What you can do
- All 34 counties, each a separate clickable shape.
- Flat colours, or stripe, dot and checkerboard patterns for the categories that would otherwise look alike.
- Colour by numbers: paste a table of names and values and the map fills itself in on a scale you choose.
- A legend you write yourself, with a heading, dragged wherever the map has room.
- Names or codes printed on the counties, on or off, in a colour you pick.
- Fill every county you have not touched in one action, or clear the whole map in one colour.
- Backgrounds, borders and border colours are all editable, or turn the borders off entirely.
- Crop the exported view, so the map fills the frame instead of floating in it.
- PNG, JPEG, SVG and PDF export at the end, with nothing to install first.

GAA maps
The championship draw, who is left in September, every county that has ever won. County identity is the whole competition, so the map does most of the arguing without you writing a word.
Where people live and move
Population change, house prices, commuting into Dublin, broadband. Thirty-odd shapes is small enough that a reader takes in the whole country at once instead of hunting for their own bit.
Where you have been in Ireland
The counties you have visited, lived in, worked in or only passed through. Three colours and a legend that says what each one means, and 34 shapes is small enough to finish in one sitting.
Ireland with its neighbours
The world map can carry Ireland and any other countries you pick on one board, and can open several of them into their own regions at once. That is the map for anything that does not stop at a border.

Common questions
How many counties are on the Ireland map?
34, every one of them a separate shape you can click and fill. The list above runs from Carlow to Wicklow.
What exactly does this map cover?
Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford each appear twice, once as the city and once as the county, which is how the source data splits them. The code beside each name tells the pair apart.
Can I colour something smaller than a county?
Not on this map. It works at county level, which is the level nearly every map of Ireland is drawn at.
Can I put the names on the map itself?
Yes. Region labels can be switched on for the whole map, in a colour and size you choose, and you can write your own text for any county where the real name is too long to fit. On a busy map most people leave the labels off and let the legend carry it.
Can I put Ireland on a map with other countries?
Yes, on the world map. Pick the countries you want, and open any of them into their own regions, so Ireland can appear at this level of detail beside its neighbours at theirs.
Do I need an account?
No. The editor opens straight away, the map stays in this browser while you work, and exporting an image never asks you to sign in. An account only matters if you want to publish a map at a link other people can open.
Can I use the exported map commercially?
The image is yours, and we ask for no credit: the only mark on it is the site address in small type in the bottom corner, and nothing is drawn across the map. Nothing from the map data is added to the picture either, because we only ship boundary data whose licence is satisfied by naming it on our credits page, so there is no credit line to print and nothing for you to pass on. Anything you add to the map stays your own.
