How to make a blank Australia map

  1. Open the Australia map. Start from the button above. What a click paints here is one state, and there are 10 of them, all listed further down this page. If you want finer detail than that, the 542 local government areas are a second map of the same country.
  2. Write the legend before you paint. Add one entry per category and say what it means in your own words. The legend is part of the exported image, so a map that made sense to you at midnight still makes sense to someone who sees it cold.
  3. Fill the states. Every click paints one state. With 10 of them, the fastest route is often to fill everything in a baseline colour first and then paint the exceptions, or to paste a table of values and let the colour scale do it.
  4. Export or publish. Download a PNG, JPEG, SVG or PDF at the size you ask for, or publish for a link with a preview image. Published maps show up in the community list at the bottom of this page.

What you can do

  • All 10 states, each a separate clickable shape.
  • A second, finer map of the same country: 542 local government areas.
  • Flat colours, or stripe, dot and checkerboard patterns for the categories that would otherwise look alike.
  • Colour by numbers: paste a table of names and values and the map fills itself in on a scale you choose.
  • A legend you write yourself, with a heading, dragged wherever the map has room.
  • Names or codes printed on the states, on or off, in a colour you pick.
  • Fill every state you have not touched in one action, or clear the whole map in one colour.
  • Backgrounds, borders and border colours are all editable, or turn the borders off entirely.
  • Crop the exported view, so the map fills the frame instead of floating in it.
  • PNG, JPEG, SVG and PDF export at the end, with nothing to install first.

Elections and sport

Federal results, state elections, AFL and NRL territory. Eight big shapes with the entire population around the edge, which is a map that reads in a second.

Heat, fire and rain

Fire seasons, rainfall, drought, where the temperature records fall. A state map is coarse for this, which is exactly what the local government area map is for.

Where you have been in Australia

The states you have visited, lived in, worked in or only passed through. Three colours and a legend that says what each one means, and 10 shapes is small enough to finish in one sitting.

Something the country map is too coarse for

When a state is too big a unit for what you are showing, the same country is also drawn as 542 local government areas. It is a much slower map to paint by hand, so it is the one to use with a pasted table of values.

Common questions

How many states are on the Australia map?

10, every one of them a separate shape you can click and fill. The list above runs from Australian Capital Territory to Western Australia.

What exactly does this map cover?

The six states and two mainland territories are joined by Jervis Bay Territory and Macquarie Island, which is why the count is ten rather than eight.

Can I colour something smaller than a state?

Yes. The same country is also drawn as 542 local government areas, which is a second starting map rather than a zoom: pick it and every click paints one of those instead.

Can I put the names on the map itself?

Yes. Region labels can be switched on for the whole map, in a colour and size you choose, and you can write your own text for any state where the real name is too long to fit. On a busy map most people leave the labels off and let the legend carry it.

Can I put Australia on a map with other countries?

Yes, on the world map. Pick the countries you want, and open any of them into their own regions, so Australia can appear at this level of detail beside its neighbours at theirs.

Do I need an account?

No. The editor opens straight away, the map stays in this browser while you work, and exporting an image never asks you to sign in. An account only matters if you want to publish a map at a link other people can open.

Can I use the exported map commercially?

The image is yours, and we ask for no credit: the only mark on it is the site address in small type in the bottom corner, and nothing is drawn across the map. Nothing from the map data is added to the picture either, because we only ship boundary data whose licence is satisfied by naming it on our credits page, so there is no credit line to print and nothing for you to pass on. Anything you add to the map stays your own.
