How to make a blank Iraq map

  1. Open the Iraq map. Start from the panel above, which is already the editor. What a click paints here is one governorate. There are 18 of them, all listed further down this page: check that list before you start, it is the whole of what this map can colour.
  2. Write the legend before you paint. Add one entry per category and say what it means in your own words. The legend is part of the exported image, so a map that made sense to you at midnight still makes sense to someone who sees it cold.
  3. Fill the governorates. Every click paints one governorate. Fill everything in a baseline colour first and then paint the exceptions, or paste a table of governorates and values and let the colour scale do it.
  4. Export or publish. Download a PNG, JPEG, SVG or PDF at the size you ask for, or publish for a link with a preview image.

What you can do

  • All 18 governorates, each a separate clickable shape.
  • Iraq beside Iran, Jordan and Kuwait and the rest of its neighbours on one map, from the custom map link below.
  • Flat colours, or stripe, dot and checkerboard patterns for the categories that would otherwise look alike.
  • Colour by numbers: paste a table of names and values and the map fills itself in on a scale you choose.
  • A legend you write yourself, with a heading, dragged wherever the map has room.
  • Names or codes printed on the governorates, on or off, in a colour you pick.
  • Backgrounds, borders and border colours are all editable, or turn the borders off entirely.
  • PNG, JPEG, SVG and PDF export at the end, with nothing to install first.

Make your own blank Iraq map

A trip across Iraq, governorate by governorate

The route, the places that were worth the detour and the ones that were not, one colour each with a legend that says which. A governorate-level map is honest about a country this size: a city dot claims too much, a national outline says nothing.

Data by governorate

Population, rainfall, income, the main language, which side a border dispute sits on. Paste a table of Iraq's governorates and values and the map shades itself on a scale you choose, which is faster than painting governorates one at a time and harder to get wrong.

Where you have been in Iraq

The governorates you have visited, lived in, worked in or only passed through. Three colours and a legend that says what each one means, and 18 shapes is small enough to finish in one sitting.

Iraq with its neighbours

The world map can carry Iraq and Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Turkey on one board, each country coloured separately, and can open any of them into their own regions. That is the map for anything that does not stop at a border.

Common questions

How many governorates are on the Iraq map?

18, every one of them a separate shape you can click and fill. The list above runs from Al-Anbar to Wasit. They are the first-level divisions of Iraq as the source data draws them, credited on our credits page, so a merged or disputed area appears the way the source has it.

Which countries border Iraq on this map?

Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Turkey. That is read from the world map's own geometry: the countries whose outlines share the border with Iraq. Each one has a map page of its own, linked above.

Is Iraq on a bigger map here too?

Yes. Iraq is one of the countries on the Asia map and the Middle East map, and on the world map, where it can be opened into its own governorates beside its neighbours at theirs.

Can I colour something smaller than a governorate?

Not on this map. It works at governorate level, which is the level nearly every map of Iraq is drawn at.

Can I put the names on the map itself?

Yes. Region labels can be switched on for the whole map, in a colour and size you choose, and you can write your own text for any governorate where the real name is too long to fit. On a busy map most people leave the labels off and let the legend carry it.

Do I need an account?

No. The editor opens straight away, the map stays in this browser while you work, and exporting an image never asks you to sign in. An account only matters if you want to publish a map at a link other people can open.

Can I use the exported map commercially?

The image is yours, and we ask for no credit: the only mark on it is the site address in small type in the bottom corner, and nothing is drawn across the map. Nothing from the map data is added to the picture either, because we only ship boundary data whose licence is satisfied by naming it on our credits page, so there is no credit line to print and nothing for you to pass on. Anything you add to the map stays your own.
